Introducing Elegance Lab: Embodiment, Creativity & Conscious Evolution

With every death there is birth.

After my grandmother’s funeral this weekend, I went back to her house where I’ve been living on and off the last 2 months. Reflecting on her 90 years and supporting my mother as she takes care of her mother has helped open me up in my own life transition.

As I pulled at the strings of what is motivating my work on the body, creativity, relationships and systems, and what I am saying yes to after many many no’s (to jobs, frameworks, methodologies, people, relationships)… a name emerged for what feels like a more holistic foundation of my current efforts:

Elegance Lab.

This feels like the parent of all my other brain children in coaching, designing, restorative health & holistic healing, and other learning I commit myself to both formally and informally.

There are two foundations to this name:

(1) My faith in something beyond my current experience of reality.

I reject the way modern discourse dichotomizes things (body and mind, matter and consciousness, science and spirituality). While I think these distinctions are important to make for the sake of studying, in practice they are flawed.

Elegance for me is

the beauty that comes from something built upon a foundation of interdependence:

it is food made with love,

a home tended to with care,

the eyes of someone when they are speaking from truth,

it is the seen and unseen interacting, co-creating one another,

and our world cries our for this not just in relationship to one another

but in the design of all things,

in our very attention to the present moment.

The second thing this title speaks to is science aka

(2) My commitment to truth as an unfolding process.

While I do want to honor the work of real labs and hope to one day have my own lab/research institute… I reject the handing over of human problems to scientific institutions when it comes to problems where the answers cannot be easily measured. Science has delivered our world from immense suffering, and our current scientific processes are not without baises.

How this impacts/fuels the work of my “lab:”

Our society’s current understandings of the brain, mind, and consciousness are still elementary. But even more elementary is our collective social consciousness when it comes to hope, for each other and for the future. And at elegance lab, I am taking a step toward form the philosophical and practical process for hope in action.

As a creative person, I know vision is essential for art — but so is the first mark on a blank page.

As a somatic coach, I know experiencing the present is essential for greater aliveness — but so is the first choice to pause and feel. (the video below is about that.)

So as a human, I am going to name something I do not know but I have a hint about

I have a hint that tapping into compassionate inquiry around our very beings, our species, our planet… is essential to this expression of elegance in the world… but so is taking action when we feel very small, constrained or disempowered.

I have barely come out of the hole I’ve been in the last 4 years and yet, I have discovered a lot from the exact place I have been.

It is from this place I have made my website, from this place I have begun to bring pieces together, and from this place I choose to birth and speak forth the Elegance Lab, a place dedicated to human & planetary survival & thriving.

To learn more about somatic process in healing from personal trauma you can the video below. At Elegance Lab, I envision collaborating with researchers, scientists, healers and leaders of social change to adapt these personal processes for healing to collective shifts.
